Mini Kiln Pot Melt

Yes You Can do a pot melt in a mini kiln!

This is the set-up

Take out kiln shelf   Line bottom of kiln with fiber paper

Apply kiln wash to bottom 'catch' bowl and put a piece of  fiber paper in bottom of 'bowl'

NOT THINFIRE PAPER

Load your glass    Careful with opaques as they will overpower the other colors

Use some clear glass too!   I usually load half clear with the colors  but just experiment and have fun!    A great use for recycling that scrap glass

  Firing

500 dph to 1000  hold 20 minutes

500 dph to 1650   All kilns are different   This is an estimate using a pyrometer in a Hot Box Kiln

Hold until glass runs out  about 30-45 minutes

It will not completely empty from the pot  You will usually have some glass remain

Vent  to 1000

turn off the kiln and do not open at all --- until it is completely cool

this usually takes a couple of hours

In my experiments-the glass is fully annealed using this schedule but you can always add an annealing soak if you feel more comfortable doing so

About 40 minutes at 960 should do the trick

You can reuse the pot - just add more glass   Just remember what COE of glass you used in each pot    I keep one for 90, one for 96, one for dark colors and one for lighter colors

Additional 'Pots'

***You can also use small terra cotta pots***   You can find them at your local department or craft store    Use a drill bit to enlarge the hole in the bottom of the pots for better glass flow
